Preliminary hearing is reset to June in murder case

ENID, Okla. — A preliminary hearing for an Enid man charged with murder scheduled for Wednesday has been reset for June 11.

Michael Laurence Berdahl, 66, was charged at the end of last year in the Dec. 16 murder of David Richard Wimmer.

Berdahl was charged four days after Wimmer’s death with first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, Berdahl’s roommate arrived home Dec. 16 to find Wimmer, 43, shot to death. Berdahl was missing from the home, but police found an empty holster.

Berdahl was arrested in Anthony, Kan., on unrelated drug complaints after Enid Police Department issued a teletype with a description of Berdahl’s vehicle.

EPD detectives went to Kansas and spoke with Berdahl, who admitted to shooting Wimmer, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Berdahl said he had been in an argument with Wimmer before pausing and saying there was “really nothing to say,” according to the affidavit. Berdahl then said, “It just happened, that’s it.”

Berdahl told detectives he did not know where he shot Wimmer, but then said, “The chest, I guess,” according to the affidavit. Berdahl said his hand was shaking when he fired a second shot at Wimmer.

An Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s report noted Wimmer had two gunshot wounds: one to his chest and one to the back of his head.
