Essay, poster contest winners named

ENID, Okla. — Several area children are winners in a patriotic essay contest and an elementary school poster contest held in connection to the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial Wall at Enid Woodring Regional Airport.

The Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park sponsored an essay contest for children in grades 3 through 12.

McKinley Elementary School student Amber Pardo won the elementary contest with her essay, “What America Means to Me.”

Waller Middle School student Emma Ainsworth won the middle school contest with her essay “What Patriotism Means to Me.”

Oklahoma Bible Academy student Elise Hamann won the junior high and high school contest with her essay “The Bill of Rights and Me.”

Each of the winners received a $100 gift certificate to purchase a U.S. Savings Bond, a framed certificate and a medal.

The poster contest was open to students kindergarten through fifth grade.

Artists were able to use charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint to express the theme of patriotism and the military. Blue Star Mothers and the Wall of Honor board judged the children’s art on the basis of artistic merit, originality and expression of the theme.

Winners, in order of first, second and third place, were:

• Kindergarten and first grade: Ashyr Ratzlaff, Glenwood; Presley Blankenship, Hayes; and Alexis Tips, Glenwood.

• Second and third grades: Madeline Conroy, McKinley; Aubrionna Surrett, McKinley; and Alberto Romero, McKinley.

• Fourth and fifth grades: Kylee Thompson, Prairie View; Jasmine Reyes, Taft; and Kadin Roberts, Prairie View.

First-place winners in each division were given a $50 gift certificate for their classroom and a $20 gift certificate for themselves. Second-place winners were given a $15 gift certificate, and third-place winners were given $10 gift certificates. All the winners also got a medal and a framed certificate.

Their art is on display at Oakwood Mall.
