Winter weather coming back Saturday night, Sunday

ENID, Okla. — With Friday’s temperatures teasing an approach of spring, a storm system entering the state will bring a wintery mix to the northwest part of the state this weekend.

Mike Honigsberg, certified director of Enid and Garfield County Emergency Management, said the weekend could see high temperatures in the teens and wind chills below zero.

“Over the weekend, we will get significantly colder as an arctic front pushes into the area. This will occur Saturday evening and overnight,” he said. “High temps Sunday and Monday will be around 20 with strong northerly winds.”

Low wind chill values and the amount of precipitation received from the front will be the two biggest issues with the storm, he said. The Garfield County area is on the borderline for of “sleet and snow” and “freezing rain and sleet” for Sunday, according to National Weather Service.

“Whether we receive a lot or a little, conditions due to the cold temps and winds will be dangerous,” Honigsberg said. “Keep this in mind if you decide to venture out.”

He cautioned road conditions could become slick and hazardous by Sunday.

The forecast for today calls for partly cloudy skies and a high near 37. Tonight, there is a 60 percent chance of freezing rain and sleet, according to NWS, mainly after midnight. The low tonight will be around 10, with a strong north wind pushing the wind chill value to minus 3.

Conditions aren’t expected to approve Sunday, with freezing rain and sleet likely before noon, according to NWS, then snow and sleet likely after. NWS puts the chance of precipitation Sunday at 70 percent.

There is a 30 percent chance of snow before midnight Sunday. The low is expected to be around 6, but a strong north wind will push wind chill values below zero again.

Conditions are expected to approve next week, with high temperatures reaching into the 50s by Wednesday and near 60 by Thursday.
