Enid donors favoring Lankford in Senate run

ENID, Okla. — Editor's Note: In the original story published June 18, 2014, the Enid News & Eagle inaccurately reported contribution totals for some of U.S. Rep. James Lankford's supporters. The correct numbers are as follows and have been updated accordingly in the story: According to Federal Election Commission data for donors to Lankford's general and primary campaigns, Lew and Suzy Meibergen gave a combined $7,800 over the past two years. Also, Lew and Myra Ward have given a total of $10,300.

U.S. Senate hopeful James Lankford leads all candidates in raising money from Enid residents.

According to Federal Election Commission data, Lankford received $46,750 from 12 individuals. His chief GOP rival, state Rep. T.W. Shannon of Lawton, reported only $750 from two donors. The reporting period covers donations made from January to June 4, but Lankford did not organize his committee until Feb. 10. Shannon filed with the FEC eight days later.

Lankford represents central Oklahoma in the U.S. House. Over the past six months, he has raised more than $2 million, including $364,425 from political action committees.

Lew and Suzy Meibergen together gave Lankford $7,800, while Lew and Myra Ward donated $10,300. The FEC also noted contributions in excess of $2,000 from John Groendyke, Stephen Jones, Ross Vanhooser and Gary Atwood.

Shannon took in $1.43 million. More than one-fifth of that came from PACs.

The June 24 Republican primary also includes former state Sen. Randy Brogdon, Andy Craig, Kevin Crow, Eric McCray and Jason Weger. They are running to succeed longtime Oklahoma politician Tom Coburn, who announced he would resign this year and leave an unfinished six-year term.

Three Democrats are seeking the U.S. Senate seat, including former state Sen. Connie Johnson, of Oklahoma City.
