EPS board accepts Hime’s resignation

ENID, Okla. — Enid Public Schools Board of Education unanimously accepted Superintendent Shawn Hime’s resignation Tuesday night.

After an hour-long, closed-door executive session, the board voted to grant Hime his leave to take charge of Oklahoma State School Board Association. He announced last week the OSSBA picked him to serve as executive director.

His last day on the job in Enid will be March 31. He’s expected to start his new job in Oklahoma City the next day.

President Jenny Webster said the board will wait until at least Monday to make a decision on a search to find Hime’s replacement. At that meeting, board members will hear a presentation from OSSBA and consider hiring the association to facilitate a candidate search.

OSSBA helped find Hime when he came to EPS, and Webster said she was pleased with their results. The search might take a while, though.

“We’d be very lucky to have someone in place by (April 1),” Webster said.

Hime has served as superintendent since 2008, and oversaw a hallmark bond issue that raised $99 million for building improvements, including construction of two new elementary schools and a University Center at Enid High School. He also helped secure more than $5 million in private donations for district initiatives.

The district expanded all pre-kindergarten classes to full-day programs during his tenure. Additionally, district enrollment has grown by more than 1,400 students, reaching 7,850 students in the current school year.

Webster said it’s too early to say what criteria the board will choose in picking the next superintendent, but she has an idea of the kind of leader she hopes to see.

“We’d like to have a clone of Shawn,” she said, adding the search team will help guide the board in refining its goals. “We’re going to have meetings to come up with our criteria and all of that.”

OSSBA provides its member school boards with training and education. It also advocates at the state Capitol on behalf of its members.
