3 felony charges filed against director of The Center

ENID — Three felony charges were filed Wednesday against the director of Enid’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Center, alleging he had sexual contact with a 15-year-old boy early this week.

Nathan Robert Bowen, 32, faces charges of forcible sodomy and two counts of lewd or indecent proposals to a child under 16. He is being held in lieu of $250,0000 bond and will be arraigned this morning.

Bowen was arrested Monday by Enid Police Department Detective Nick John after EPD received a complaint from the teen’s mother, saying her son had been molested.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, police were contacted about 8:10 p.m. Monday by the teen’s mother.

Officers spoke with the teen, who said on Sunday he’d gone with his aunt to The Center, which is an organization of people who are members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender lifestyle. The boy said while at The Center he met Bowen and gave him his cell phone number and the two began texting.

The teen told police he met Bowen at Government Springs Park about 12:30 p.m. Monday and the two went to a supermarket to buy supplies for The Center. After shopping, the boy said they went to The Center, 1317 S. Van Buren.

Once at The Center, the boy said Bowen locked the door after they entered and Bowen told him to take his clothes off and lie on the couch, according to the affidavit. That is when the alleged molestation occurred, according to the affidavit.

A detective spoke with Bowen Monday at Enid Police Department.

Bowen said he was director of The Center and president of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Bowen said he has been associated with The Center since March of 2010.

John asked Bowen about Sunday night and Bowen said they were having a party and he met a girl and her nephew, the 15-year-old.

Bowen said he and the teen hung out for most of the evening and before they left, exchanged phone numbers. John asked Bowen how old the teen was and Bowen said during the party the teen announced he was 15.

Bowen told John the teen began texting him Monday, and he texted him back several times. Bowen said he met the teen at Government Springs Park, picked the boy up and went to run some errands.

Bowen said they went to the supermarket and then The Center when they finished shopping, Once at The Center, Bowen said he locked the door behind them, turned on the stereo and sat on the couch next to the teen to talk.

According to the affidavit, Bowen admitted to kissing and fondling the teen.

Bowen said, prior to the interview ending, he prided himself with being able to help youth with their problems and being a mentor to youths of Enid, according to the affidavit.
