A page from the past: Frontier Festival Town Social Saturday in Humphrey Heritage Village

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s history is coming back to the future this Saturday with the Frontier Festival Town Social.

The event is modeled after the regular community gatherings that were held in the pioneer era.

“We’re focusing on just a few years after the Land Run, where people would have these celebrations,” said Cody Jolliff, education director for Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. “It was one of the biggest things of the year.”

The Town Social will be in Humphrey Heritage Village at the Heritage Center, 507 S. 4th in Enid.

A carnival kicks off the event at 5 p.m., followed by a dance at 7 p.m.

The carnival will have games, popcorn and candy, along with demonstrations of talents like trick shooting, trick roping and whip skill.

Jolliff practiced the trick shooting portion (with blanks) Wednesday with museum assistant “Tennessee” Sarah Owens.

“It’s things that people in the town would have done. They would have brought in a few acts, but a lot of it would just be things that they would build themselves,” Jolliff said. “It’ll be a down-home, traditional social event.”

The museum is setting up tents on the grounds to keep everyone in the shade. During the carnival, the museum will have music from a brass band and a box supper for those who want it.

“The brass band will play traditional music from the time period, and also the grand march, when everyone enters the dance,” he said.

The Prairie County Avengers will play traditional string music during the partnered dance, known as a contra dance, starting at 7 p.m. Jolliff said revelers will be able to punch dance cards for their favorite partners, and someone will be on hand to help attendees learn the steps.

Advance tickets for $5 can be bought at the museum and entitles the purchaser to skip the ticket line Saturday night. Tickets for the supper cost another $10.
