Career training programs in spotlight Sunday at Autry Tech’s open house

ENID, Okla. — Nearly 30 career training programs available at Autry Technology Center will be highlighted during the school’s annual open house Sunday.

In addition, information on other courses that are available to the public and area high school students will be available.

Marketing Director Melissa Jenlink said prospective students and their families will be able to see a wide variety of the programs available. The open house will be 2-4 p.m.

Health trades continue to be a big industry, and classes in health-related fields are popular at Autry, Jenlink said.

“We’ve also seen an increase in welding and truck driving, automotive and diesel,” Jenlink said. “That is being driven by what we’re seeing happen in the industry.”

Autry Tech’s compressed natural gas classes teach students how to install CNG systems in vehicles and maintain those that have been installed. Jenlink said the open house would focus more on that program this year, and Autry Tech’s CNG vehicle will be displayed in front of the building.

Autry Tech has a client with a business that converts regular gas vehicles into dual-use vehicles that operate on gasoline or CNG.

Increases in student population have been seen in heating and air conditioning, Jenlink said, because of the limited number of people in the business, and the electronics program, which provides a detailed understanding of electronics. She said students have completed the Autry Tech course then gone to universities to major in engineering.

High school students spend one-half day at their home high schools and one half-day at Autry in theory and hands-on courses. Adult students have the option to attend half a day or all day, Jenlink said. Tuition is free for in-district high school students.

Autry Tech recently hosted high school sophomores on a tour of the facility, and the open house will give them a chance to return and ask detailed questions and talk with instructors. Prospective students and members of the public may spend time in each area and talk to instructors and students about their disciplines and how career training benefits them.

Open house activities also include an offering by the culinary classes featuring healthy desserts and one-dish meals from a crock pot. Visitors also can tour the newest house made by students in the construction classes, participate in the safety challenge and witness a renewable energy demonstration. They also can receive interview and resume tips, watch computer drafting demonstrations and participate in mock surgeries in the surgical technology classes.

Medical students will be on hand to provide free health screenings, pulmonary screenings, and cosmetology students will provide free hand and arm massages.

Autry’s financial aid office will conduct a free come-and-go workshop during the open house. Financial aid forms will be available.

“The workshop will help parents or students fill out their FAFSA forms and put them online,” Jenlink said.

Autry Tech serves nearly 13,000 people annually, including area employees who receive training through the Business and Industry Services Department, which works with more than 400 local businesses each year, she said.

Autry Tech has been part of the Enid community since 1967. It is one of 29 CareerTech schools in Oklahoma.
