Local student one of 15 to have art featured in calendar

ENID, Okla. — A Glenwood Elementary School fifth-grader is being honored at a ceremony today at the state Capitol.

Rebekah Donnell, whose teacher, Kitty Herbel, shared the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board art contest with her students, is one of 15 students from around the state whose art will be featured in an upcoming calendar.

“The calendars will be ready this summer. They are a school year calendar,” said Jill Harrison, OERB communications director.

Rebekah, her younger brother, Michael, and her parents, Alvin and Wyndi, will make a day of it at the Capitol.

This is not the first time Rebekah’s art has done well in contests.

“Rebekah has placed best in show two times in art shows at Park Avenue Thrift,” Wyndi Donnell said.

Rebekah and 20 other student artists are being feted at the OERB’s annual “Well Site Safety Day” at the Capitol. They are winners of the OERB’s Well Site Safety Coloring Contest for students in kindergarten through second grade and Well Site Safety Poster Contest for students in third through sixth grade. The art contests drew 3,255 entries.

The contests are meant to highlight the messages of the OERB’s “Well Sites are DUH-DUH-Dangerous” campaign, which educates young students about the dangers of playing at well sites.

“Well sites can be very dangerous for children, and our goal is to prevent Oklahoma kids from being hurt by playing on or near one,” said Mindy Stitt, executive director of the OERB. “The art contests help us get our messages out by allowing students to be creative, which really drives the lesson home for them.”

At today’s ceremony, student winners will have the chance to meet their legislators, show their winning work and learn more about well site safety, Harrison said. Afterward, all will go to the OERB building for lunch and games.
