Nominations still open for 2012 Legacy awards

ENID, Okla. — There still is time to nominate a local hero for the 2012 Legacy Honor Awards.

The awards, which honor local veterans from each branch of service, were inaugurated in 2010 at the first Legacy Ball.

Elaine Johns, executive director of Woodring Wall of Honor, said Legacy Awards organizers have extended the deadline for this year’s nominations to 5 p.m. Monday.

Johns said veterans “from the greatest generation to the latest generation,” from World War II to present, are eligible for the award.

After nominations close Monday, judges will select one honoree each from the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

Honorees will be recognized during next Sunday’s Veterans Day Parade and Legacy Program, scheduled in conjunction with the re-dedication of the renovated Convention Hall.

The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 18, followed by the Convention Hall re-dedication at 2 p.m. and presentation of the Legacy Awards at 2:30 p.m.

The winning posters in the Woodring Wall of Honor Veterans Day K-5 school poster contest also will be presented following the Legacy Awards.

Johns said architects’ renderings of the Woodring Wall of Honor permanent Vietnam Veterans Memorial also will be available for viewing in Convention Hall during the Nov. 18 festivities.

The Woodring Wall of Honor organization raised $250,000 and received another $250,000 from an anonymous donor, to purchase the 380-foot long replica of the memorial that stands on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Another $100,000 is being raised to prepare the site where the wall is to be erected.

The Vietnam Memorial Wall Project is a 501(c)(3) organization, meaning all donations are tax-deductible.

Donations can be mailed to Vietnam Memorial Wall Project, c/o Security National Bank, P.O. Box 1272, Enid, OK 73702, or donations can be made in person at any SNB branch.

Johns said the wall will arrive in Enid Nov. 30, and plans are for the memorial to be erected by next year’s Memorial Day ceremony.

Nominations for the Legacy Awards can be downloaded at www.vis and emailed to Johns at ejohns@nodanet .org.

Nominations must be signed by both the nominator and nominee, and must be accompanied by the nominee's discharge form DD-214.

Johns said many veterans are hesitant to nominate themselves for recognition, but they all deserve to be honored by the community.

“There are a lot of veterans in our community who have accomplished great things, and they don’t consider themselves heroes,” Johns said. “Our veterans are people who stepped up and volunteered to put their lives on the line, and that makes them heroes in our eyes. It takes something very special to be willing to give your life for someone else, and our veterans have shown they’re willing to do that. We need to honor them for their sacrifices and their service.”
