Adams kids pick winner in mock race

ENID, Okla. — It was a close race, but Duck waddled past Grace to win the presidential race, despite Grace sweeping the female vote in the Adams Elementary School kindergarten election.

The kindergartners in Jamie Aguilar’s and Brandy Fagan’s classes learned about the electoral process by having their own candidates, campaigning for them and, on the appointed day, voting.

Duck was an experienced politician who lived on a farm until he got tired of doing chores under the farmer’s rule and ran for farmer. After being elected farmer, duck ran for governor. After winning the seat at the state capital, Duck turned his beak toward president. Duck is a character in the book, “Duck For President” by Doreen Cronin.

His electoral opponent was Grace, a character in the book, “Grace For President,” by Kelly DiPucchio. Grace’s teacher told her class no woman had ever been president, and Grace decided she’d be the first.

The little ones registered to vote, and as in any election, the campaigning began. Supporters of each candidate touted their favorite’s best qualities.

On Monday, students got their voter registration cards and went to the polls to vote. They marked the ballots and dropped them in the box to be counted.

“I voted for Duck, because he’s really cool and nice,” said Tiauna Hazlett.

Mokki Adrike also voted for Duck.

“I liked him,” Mokki said.

“I voted for Grace, because I like the book and she was pretty,” said Kynslee Rogers.

Taylor Watson also voted for Grace.

Aniya January was even more impressed with Grace.

“I want her to win, because I think she’s a superstar,” Aniya said.

Teacher’s assistant Austin Hazen gave each student an “I voted” sticker after they cast their ballots.

Haime Garcia proudly showed off his sticker to Aguilar as he came back to the classroom.

“They got their ‘I voted’ stickers,” Aguilar said. “They’re going to be looking to see how many of their parents did.”

When the last vote was counted, Duck edged out Grace by a mere three votes.
