ENID, Okla. — Enid police say an officer fatally shot a man who had threatened an individual and then confronted officers with a weapon at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Jimmie Wayne Birchfield, 36, of Enid, was shot by police Saturday after officers responded to a 911 weapons call at 1301 N. Central in the northeast sector of Enid, police said.

Police said Birchfield was threatening to kill the reporting party and their dogs. When police arrived, Birchfield confronted them and was fatally shot by an officer.

An Enid EMS crew went to the 1301 Central address at 6:59 p.m. Saturday, and police assistance was reported at 1:04 a.m. Sunday, records show.

According to routine procedure, an Enid police officer has been placed on routine administrative leave. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident.

Enid police had no further comment at press time.

A neighbor who lives down the street from the residence said she heard two shots, but did not see anything. Neighbor DeeDee Adams said she does not know whether the shots were fired from the same gun.

Two of the victim’s family members, including half-sister Carolyn Storey, said Birchfield used a wheelchair.
