ENID, Okla. —
Covington voters will consider the renewal of a tax to fund the town’s police department during a special election on June 24.
The 1 percent tax initially was approved in 2006, according to Town Clerk Sondra Easterly.
Voters renewed the tax after it expired in 2009 and are being asked to renew it again until 2019.
“It’s exclusively to fund the police department,” Easterly said.
The town did have a police force before the tax was approved in 2006.
“Being a small town, our funds are really low,” Easterly said. “We brought it to the citizens to vote, to see if they wanted to help pay for (the) police department, and they voted yes.”
