ENID, Okla. — Enid will host the nationally recognized Super Retriever Series Classic Oct. 3-6, the second-straight year the dog competition has come here.

Enid is the only city in Oklahoma to host an SRS event in 2013.

Kelly Goodwin, general manager of Oakwood Mall, said the mall is partnering with Visit Enid to bring the series here.

SRS Classic events are a combination of retriever trials and Super Dock competitions, Goodwin said.

The retriever trials consist of professional and amateur divisions. The Super Dock holds super fly, super V and the junior flyers, according to the Super Retriever Series website.

Field trials will be 7 a.m. Oct. 3 in Hillsdale at the Sportsman’s Ranch, and are hosted by Hillsdale Christian School.

“Field trials are a competitive sport designed to test dog and hunter competence in retrieving promptly to hand, hunting and game finding, working within a gun range, control, steadiness,” Goodwin said.

The Super Dock competition will be at Oakwood Mall. Dock jumping is a sport in which dogs and handlers are tested in a series of jumps to compete for distance or height from a dock into a pool of water. There will be times for community fun jumps, 12:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and 4:30 p.m. Oct. 5, if time permits.

Organizer of the SRS series, Shannon Nardi of Dancing Dog Entertainment, said she wants to get local people out and let them bring their dogs and be a part of the event. Pros and organizers teach dogs how to go off the docks and participate in the events.

Dog handlers wishing to compete in SRS or fun jumps must register online at www.superretrieverseries.com.

Oakwood Mall will host a 5K fun run/walk Oct. 5. The run is hosted by the humanitarian school at Oakwood Mall. Pre-registration can be made online or at the Oakwood Mall customer service desk. Registration also will be available 8:30-9 a.m. the day of the race. The run begins at 9 a.m. around the mall.

Also that weekend, Ducks Unlimited will host a calling contest 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5 at the center court area across from Chen Garden. All ages are welcome. The competition is separated into junior and senior callers. Junior callers are 17 and under. All participants receive a complementary duck call. Winners in each category will receive a Winchester SXP pump shotgun.

“The Super Retriever Series is considered the world’s premier canine aquatics competition, where you can have the most fun with your dogs,” Goodwin said. “It is a wonderful time to get out with the whole family to watch some incredible athletes perform.”
