Vietnam Memorial Wall replica to be dedicated Veterans Day

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s 80-percent replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall will be dedicated on Veterans Day.

The wall is being erected at Enid Woodring Regional Airport, and the dedication ceremony will be 11 a.m. Nov. 11.

“Gov. Mary Fallin is scheduled to attend. She will declare the wall the state’s official monument dedicated to those who served in the Vietnam War,” Elaine Johns said.

Keynote speaker will be Col. Leon “Lee” Ellis, author of the book “Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton.” The book shares Ellis’ experience as a prisoner of war and the 14 leadership principles that helped him and his companions resist, survive and return.

The dedication ceremony also will include Grammy-nominated trumpeter David Hooten, a 21-gun salute and special music from a youth honor choir, Johns said.

Hooten lives in Oklahoma City. He has soloed with Kiev Symphony Orchestra, Garland Symphony Orchestra, East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, Enid Symphony Orchestra and Mormon Youth Symphony and Choir. He also has performed with Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra.

Hooten performed “Amazing Grace,” before a worldwide audience at the opening of the memorial ceremony for victims of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Immediately following the ceremony, those attending will be able to search for specific names using a database maintained by the Blue Star Mothers.

On Nov. 9, Moose Riders of Enid Lodge 1740 will sponsor a 100-mile motorcycle ride called “Ride to Remember.” The ride will begin at the Moose Lodge, 302 E. Purdue.

“All riders will receive a dog tag bearing the name of an Oklahoma Vietnam veteran who appears on the wall,” Johns said.

Riders will stop at various veteran parks and static displays throughout northwest Oklahoma, she said.

On Nov. 10, the Woodring Wall of Honor board will sponsor the annual Legacy Award ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at Chisholm Trail Expo Center, 111 W. Purdue, honoring five area veterans, one from each branch of the military. Ellis will speak at the ceremony.
