Candy Cane Cash coming Saturday

ENID, Okla. — Start gathering your Candy Cane Cash tickets, because Saturday is the big day.

Santa Claus will arrive at 8:30 a.m., judging of Candy Cane Dash costumes starts at 8:45 a.m. and drawing for tickets begins at 9 a.m. on the Garfield County Court House lawn, said Frank Baker, director of Eagle Marketing.

The ninth annual Candy Cane Cash Christmas giveaway promotion for the $10,000 in drawings began Oct. 29.

Scotty Maxwell, advertising director for the Enid News & Eagle, said 5,000 people attended the drawing last year, and he expects the same number this year.

“I’m excited, because this year it has gone from six weeks to seven weeks, and we started a week earlier,” Maxwell said.

This year, there also is a Facebook page. This allows Enid shoppers to keep up with the latest events and participating merchants.

“It’s been an extremely successful campaign,” Maxwell said. “I’m very proud of it and hope it continues to grow.”

Volunteer April Danahy has been involved with the Candy Cane Cash promotion every year. Danahy was membership chairwoman of the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce the year it started. She went to chamber president and CEO Jon Blankenship and Chairman Brian Hayden about the idea. Both liked it, and they partnered with the News & Eagle.

The event started as a $5,000 giveaway, and has increased to $10,000.

“If you look at the sales tax revenue from 2004 through 2011, sales tax revenues increased 35.5 percent during Candy Cane Cash,” Danahy said. “We think it’s because of Candy Cane Cash. Each ticket represents $10 in total sales.”

A Candy Cane Dash will be featured again this year. For more information, contact Glenn McDaniel at Wheat Capitol Running Co. or go online to GetMeRegistered.com. The dash starts at 8 a.m.

Chamber officials estimated the local shopping promotion accounts for between $2.5 and $4 million in local sales during the holiday season.
