Okeene Elementary School recently held its annual spelling bee. The winner in first through third grades was third-grader Lauren Luckie, with second-grader Madison Schmidt as runner up.
The fourth-through-sixth-grade division winner was Jess Gabill, with Katie Boeckman as runner up.
The Okeene Junior High Lady Whippets participated in the County Line Junior High Basketball Tournament. They beat the Crescent Lady Tigers to bring home the third-place trophy. Members of the team include Sadie Moore, Brooklyn Meier, Jada Lorenz, Ashleigh Hicks, Karlli Giesick, Meagan Osmus, Kayla Fast, Holly Boeckman, Denise Aldrich, Desirea Alvarado, Savannah Lamb, Brookelyn Lozer, Kallee Dunn and Clarissa Krause. The team is coached by Ross Doane.
The Okeene Junior High Whippets also competed in the tournament, defeating the Crescent Tigers to bring home the consolation championship. Members of the team include Mason Gambill, Craig Westfahl, Blake Bedwell, Koby Smith, Masen Graham, Terry Barnes, Nolan Rackley, Carlos Rivera, Michael Day, Jordan Buhr, Joel Nusz, Drew Nault, Trey Brown, Aaron Winstead and Cashen Graham. Their coach is Patrick Penner.
Children ages 10-14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the Knights of Columbus free-throw contest at 2 p.m. today at Okeene High School gym. The championship is sponsored each year, with winners progressing through local, district, and state contests. Winners of each age division will receive a trophy. Newly appointed Town Board Trustee Cory Weber has been sworn in by Mayor Wayne Carter.
Cory was appointed to the seat vacated by Chip Outhier. He will serve the remainder of that term until the next municipal election, slated for April.
Okeene Electric customers Tom Ellis, Debra Farhar and Doug Barnes received rebate checks for the installation of high-efficiency electric heat pumps in their home.
Okeene Hospital welcomed preceptee Valerie Truong to serve the month of January as a perceptee. Valerie is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Oklahoma. After medical school, she will pursue a career in dermatology.
