GED changes: Testing for adult students now computerized

ENID, Okla. — Adult students who have passed part, but not all, of the tests to get their GED will need to finish up by the end of the year or they’ll have to start again.

Clayton Nolen, director of Carver Education Center, said starting in January 2014, all GED testing will be computerized and scored by a national testing company. Because of the change, previous test scores no longer will be available.

“The state is no longer in charge,” Nolen said.

The change from pencil-and- paper testing to computerized format isn’t the only new thing, Nolen said.

“It’s going to be a different scoring,” he said. “Right now, you get one score and after 2013, it will be three scores.”

Nolen noted the last major change in GED testing occurred in 2002, and only minor changes have been made in the test since then. The 2014 GED test has several changes.

“It’s just going to be changed, and it’s about time,” Nolen said.

The testing fee will go from $75 at Carver Center to $120. That fee is set by the testing company.

Multiple-choice questions have five answer options now, but will have four options in 2014.

Currently, there is a reading test and a writing test, but there will be a reading-comprehension component and a writing component in 2014. Passages in the reading section will be longer.

Short-answer questions will be part of the 2014 test.

“We’re letting people be aware of the changes,” Nolen said. “These changes are coming whether we like it or not.”

Nolen said the new test will require different approaches for success. Those who are part-way through want to finish before the new test is deployed.

“We’re not trying to scare people,” Nolen said. ‘We’re just trying to let people know now is the time to get in and take it.”

People who are not current students at Carver Educational Center, but want to take the GED test before the changes take effect, should come to Carver in person and apply, Nolen said.

Carver is located at 815 S. 5th.
