Accumulating snow forecast today

ENID, Okla. — A winter storm warning issued for northern and central Oklahoma forecasts 5 to 10 inches of snowfall in the area.

The warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for areas in northern Oklahoma including Enid, Alva, Arnett, Buffalo, Cherokee, Medford, Kingfisher, Fairview, Cheyenne, Taloga, Weatherford, Clinton, Watonga, Woodward, Perry and Ponca City.

Snow was expected to begin over far western Oklahoma about midnight, spreading into central Oklahoma around sunrise today, according to the National Weather service. The heaviest snowfall is expected to fall between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. today.

High temperatures today are expected to be in the upper-20s. Lows will be in the single digits.

Roads will become slick and hazardous, and the NWS is advising motorists to avoid travel if possible. The service also advised being able to care for yourself and your family if electrical power is lost.

This storm is one of several expected to hit the state over the coming week.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews in southern and eastern parts of the state reported slick and hazardous roads Monday morning. The department was discouraging travel in those areas.

During snow and/or ice conditions, according to ODOT, motorists need to:

• Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.

• Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway, but actually is a thin layer of ice.

• Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.

ODOT also offers these winter driving tips:

• Always wear your seat belt.

• In snow or ice, take it slow. If possible, limit travel during the storm.

• Allow ample time to reach your destination.

• Remember, bridges and ramps will be the first to freeze.

• Increase space between you and other vehicles to between three to five car lengths.

• Anticipate the flow of traffic to avoid abrupt actions while steering.

• Snow and ice make stopping distances much longer.

• If your vehicle slides, steer the same direction you are sliding and take your foot off the gas and brake.

• Drive with your lights on even during the day.

• Do not use cruise control while driving on slippery surfaces.

To check current Oklahoma road conditions, call the Department of Public Safety’s road conditions hotline at (888) 425-2385.

Those who must travel out of state are urged to check area road conditions before leaving.

For out-of-state road conditions, call: Arkansas, (800) 245-1672; Colorado, (303) 639-1111; Kansas, (866) 511-5368; Missouri, (800) 222-6400; New Mexico, (800) 432-4269; and Texas, (800) 452-9292.
