No more hot dogs: Two water coolers will help keep shelter animals cooled

ENID, Okla. — When Jerry Zaloudek heard the dogs at Enid Animal Control Shelter did not have any air conditioning, she knew something had to be done.

Zaloudek contacted Vickie Grantz, executive director of SPCA Enid, who in turn put out a call for help on Facebook to get those dogs cooled off.

“I put it out on Facebook and it was paid for in less than 24 hours,” Grantz said. “The people of Enid are the ones who paid for those.”

Two Cyclone brand portable water coolers were at Enid Animal Control Shelter the following day. The coolers are filled three times a day with water, and can be moved to cool any part of the shelter area where the 34 dog pens are located.

Animal Control Supervisor Allen Elder thanked the community for its support, and specifically those who helped purchase the coolers for the center.

“They love them,” Elder said, referring to the animals’ feelings for the coolers. “It’s a big improvement with the heat back here, and a lot better for the dogs.”

Elder said before the coolers were delivered about a month ago, industrial fans were used to cool the dog area of the center.

“Before, we just left the doors open,” he said.

Grantz said getting the coolers for Enid Animal Control Shelter would have been done sooner, but no one knew the dogs were without any air conditioning.

“We had no idea they didn’t have any air conditioning back here,” she said. “Once we found out, we did something about it.”

Now, with cooler pens, Elder encouraged people to come and adopt an animal. He also reminded pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered.
