Pod concept to be used in new EPS schools

ENID — Enid’s new Garfield Elementary School will be designed in a “pod concept” where each grade level is contained in its own section of the building.

During a special meeting Monday, members of Enid Public Schools Board of Education discussed plans for the school.

The new Garfield is one of two elementary school buildings that will be built with funds from a $99 million bond issue passed in February.

“What we have are grade-level pods with group areas,” said EPS Superintendent Shawn Hime.

Each pod will have a group area where classes in each grade all can be brought together into one room for certain activities. Each pod also will have its own teacher workroom where teachers can make copies and plan lessons.

Another feature in the new school will be restrooms in each pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classroom, Hime said.

The school will have a large parking lot by the entrance to gymnasium and cafeteria areas. The gymnasium and cafeteria will be separate from each other, and the cafeteria will have a stage platform for performances. Public events may be held in the gymnasium and cafeteria areas, and several locking doors will close off the rest of the school from the public after hours.

The floor plan for the new school also specifies a set of double doors in the front entrance of the school that will require all visitors to come through the office for security reasons.

The Stacy Group, an architectural firm from Owasso, is designing the new building, and Hime said the building is expected to be opened for bids in about four months.

The building is expected to be completed before August 2012.

Another new building, an elementary school on the west side of Enid, also is expected to be completed before August 2012.

The district is working to secure property for both school locations.

During the meeting the board also approved the resignation of Shelea Bennet and entered into an executive session to discuss employment of personnel, purchase or appraisal of real property and pending litigation.

Absent from the meeting were board members Taylor Branstetter, Willa Jo Fowler and Colleen Arnold.
