Cherokee Strip Civil War events this week

ENID, Okla. — Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center will host two events this week on the topic of the American Civil War.

The first will be a lecture by Bill Corbett on the “American Civil War in Indian Territory.” The lecture will be 7 tonight in the Gantz Center at Northern Oklahoma College Enid. Admission is free.

Corbett is a professor of history at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. His area of interest is regional and state history. He is a veteran of the Navy and taught for eight years at NOC before going to NSU. Since 1994, he has been a member of the board of directors of Oklahoma Historical Society.

The second event will be the Brown Bag Lunch & Learn at noon Wednesday.  Dan Lawrence from the University of Oklahoma will speak on “Civil War Artillery” and give examples of ordnance used in the Civil War. The lecture will be in the Humphrey Heritage Village Church and is free to the public.

Lawrence has been an adjunct assistant professor at OU since 1992. His area of interest is history, including 19th century military living history. He has also been a member of Oklahoma Historical Society board of directors since 1994.

Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is hosting an exhibit on “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” through May 16. The exhibit addresses the topics of division in the United States, the Civil War, slavery and civil liberties. To complement the exhibit, the winning artwork from the Smokin’ Red Dirt BBQ Student Art Show is on display. The students worked with the same exhibit theme in mind when creating their winning pieces of art.

“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” is a traveling exhibition for libraries and was organized by National Constitution Center and American Library Association Public Programs Office.
