Festival of Flavor draws crowd

ENID — The crowd of people who showed up to eat at the fifth Enid Rotary Club Festival of Flavor filled the food court at Enid High School to overflowing Tuesday night.

The annual event, a partnership between Rotarians and Emerson Middle School, primarily raises funds for the middle school, which it uses to purchase technology.

Emerson Principal Doug Stafford said the school hopes the fundraiser brings in enough to purchase two SmartBoards. The school currently has SmartBoards in 90 percent of the rooms, Stafford said. Last year’s Festival of Flavor allowed the school to buy two of the devices.

“Having the partnership with the Rotary has been a blessing,” Stafford said.

A smaller portion of proceeds — about $1,000 — will go to a Rotary International campaign to wipe out polio worldwide.

About 60 Emerson students helped out Tuesday night, clearing tables and keeping things moving along smoothly as the crowd of hungry diners came in to sample the offerings of local eateries.

Diners, who paid $10 per ticket, got to sample delicacies from Enid-area restaurants and food suppliers, including Chick-fil-A, KFC, Golden Chick, Buffalo Wild Wings, El Chico, Cafe Garcia, Angel Delight, Sonic, Starbucks, Jumbo Foods, Great American Cookie Co., Freddy’s Frozen Custard, Oakwood Country Club and Advance Foods.

Chen Garden and Papa Murphy’s Pizza were new to this year’s festival.

Mid America Wholesale supplied plasticware, napkins, plates and cups.

Martie Oyler, a member of the Rotary Club board of directors, said the community service-oriented club’s partnership with Emerson began five years ago when the Enid Rotary Club celebrated its 90th anniversary. Club members worked with the school, and students pitched in to help the club with projects. The pairing has stayed strong ever since, she said.

Enid Rotary Club has about 160 members, Oyler said.
