Vance will host Special Olympics

ENID, Okla. — For the 24th year, Vance Air Force Base will host Cherokee Strip Area 6 Special Olympics 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

The 44th annual event will take place at the base track. More than 200 Vance personnel have volunteered to help put on the meet.

Opening ceremonies will include a parade of some 200 athletes, who will compete in 16 track and field events. When the athletes are not competing, they will be able to relax with activities such as carnival games, a bounce castle and face painting.

This is the final event that will qualify Area 6 athletes for the state Special Olympics Summer Games, set for May 8-10 at Oklahoma State University.

Area 6 consists of Garfield, Grant and Kay counties.
