Retail sales take small dip

ENID, Okla. — Retail sales in Enid dipped slightly in the fall, based on tax distributions to cities and towns from Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Net taxable sales in Enid during the period of late October and early November were down $1,881,714, compared with the same period in 2012.

According to OTC figures, net taxable sales in Enid during the period were 2.6 percent below sales during the same period in 2012, a blip in a string of strong results for the past couple of years. Vehicle and fuel sales are not included in the net taxable sales figures.

Enid received $2,440,073 from OTC, a decrease of $65,860 from last year’s receipts.

City Manager Eric Benson said the completion of construction downtown may have had something to do with the slight drop. “We expected that in October, [but] I think we’re still ahead of the rest of the state and the region,” Benson said. “You’ll see those corrections. I’m more interested in November and December. From the sales tax reports I have seen, they are up.”

Elsewhere in the area, results were mixed in northwest Oklahoma county seats.

Medford recorded the largest percentage increase in the area. The Grant County seat recorded an increase of 239 percent — $3,006,225 — in net taxable sales for the October-November period compared with a year ago. Alva, in Woods County, recorded a 29.7 percent increase, or $3,406,752 more in net taxable sales. Woodward saw an increase of 4.9 percent, or $1,556,342 more in net taxable sales. Watonga, the Blaine County seat, saw an increase of 2.7 percent — $75,820 — in net taxable sales.

The biggest decline was seen in Cherokee, the Alfalfa County seat. Cherokee had a 25.4 percent decrease — $982,215 less — in net taxable sales compared with last year. Fairview recorded a 20.2 percent decrease, or $849,675 less, and Kingfisher saw a drop of 5.4 percent, or $418,600 less.

Statewide, OTC returned $130,904,289 in sales tax collections to 511 cities and towns, reflecting an increase of $2,615,512 from what was distributed in December last year.
