ENID, Okla. —
Like to shop in Enid? Like to win money? Then Candy Cane Cash is made for you.
The ninth annual Candy Cane Cash Christmas giveaway will begin Oct. 29. Tickets are available at participating merchants for the $10,000 drawing Dec. 15 on the downtown Square.
Scott Maxwell, advertising director for the Enid News & Eagle, said 5,000 people attended the drawing last year, and he expects the same number this year.
“I’m excited, because this year, it has gone from six weeks to seven weeks, and we’re starting week earlier,” Maxwell said. “There will be more people and more chances to win and select Enid as their shopping choice.”
This year, vinyl banners for participating merchants will be available, and there also is a Facebook page. The Facebook page will allow Enid shoppers to keep up with the latest events and participating merchants.
“It’s been an extremely successful campaign,” Maxwell said. “I’m very proud of it and hope it continues to grow.”
Volunteer April Danahy has been involved with the Candy Cane Cash promotion every year. Danahy was membership chair of the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce the year it started. She went to chamber President and CEO Jon Blankenship and chairman Brian Hayden about the idea. Both liked it, and they partnered with the Enid News & Eagle.
The event started as a $5,000 giveaway and has increased to $10,000.
“If you look at the sales tax revenue from 2004 through 2011, sales tax revenues increase 35.5 percent during candy cane cash,” Danahy said. “We think it’s because of Candy Cane Cash. Each ticket represents $10 in total sales.”
A Candy Cane Dash will be featured again this year. For more information, contact Glen McDaniel at Wheat Capitol Running Co. or get meregitered.com. The dash starts at 8 a.m.
Chamber officials estimated the local shopping promotion accounts for anywhere between $2.5 million to $4 million in local sales during the holiday season.
