Early voting for PC-H question is this week

ENID, Okla. — Early voting for the Jan. 14 Pond Creek-Hunter Public Schools bond issue election will be Thursday and Friday.

Garfield County Election Board will be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. those days to accommodate school district patrons who want to vote early, said Election Board Secretary Roy Schneider. The election board is located at 903 Failing.

State law changed late last year, setting early voting on Thursday and Friday, instead of Friday and Monday.

Registered voters who become incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday still will be able to vote, Schneider said.

He said state law permits registered voters who will be unable to go to the polls because they became incapacitated to vote on an emergency basis.

“If you think that you or someone you know fits into this category, contact the county election board office at (580) 237-6016 as soon as possible for more information,” Schneider said.

At issue is a $1.045 million bond issue that Superintendent Joel Quinn said is expected to result in no tax increase. The two-year bond initiative, if passed, will be used for needed maintenance and repairs.

If the initiative is passed, bond proceeds will be used to install new entrance doors equipped with security locking devices; replace existing single-pane windows with more energy-efficient windows; install a sprinkler system; install a monitored fire alarm system; replace ceiling, carpet and tile; update student restrooms and bring them up to ADA code; and replace the 1970s HVAC unit in the high school building with new heating and air conditioning units.

School patrons in October defeated a much larger bond issue that included many of the same projects, as well as construction of a new gymnasium, a multi-purpose safe room and improvements for the football field. That bond issue had an $11.5 million price tag and drew opposition from 55.4 percent of the voters who cast ballots.
