Literacy Council tutors earn recognition

Enid Literacy Council volunteer tutors earned recognition from Oklahoma Literacy Coalition during an awards celebration Oct. 28 at the Public Library of Enid and Garfield County.

Oklahoma Literacy Coali-tion supports literacy efforts throughout Oklahoma, and Enid Literacy Council officials attend its annual conference for additional training and information about serving students with low literacy levels and English language learners.

Volunteer tutors honored in Enid were Judy Countryman and Judy Ortiz, bronze award, 50 hours of tutoring; Johnnie Atwood and Karen Womack, gold award, 150 hours of tutoring; Barbara Anderson, Leah Jones, Mona Loewen and Betty Shellady, master tutor award, 250 hours of tutoring plus 40 hours of literacy-related continuing education; Tina Blunk, Ruth McElroy and Alice Semrad, Hall of Fame Tutor award, given to those who have received the Master Tutor Award and obtained at least 35 more hours of tutoring.

Additional awards were given to adult learner Patty Vega, Outstanding Achieve-ment Award for literacy skills and achieving goals; and Enid News and Eagle, outstanding service in promoting literacy awareness in the community.
