Kiwanis name Police Officer of the Year

By Cass Rains, Staff Writer

“One of Enid’s finest” was honored Wednesday as Kiwanis Club Police Officer of the Year.

Enid Police Department Officer Antonio Moreno receiv-ed the award during a club luncheon.

Retired Associate District Judge Richard M. Perry an-nounced Moreno as the group’s latest recipient, with Wednesday’s presentation marking the 23rd time the award has been given.

Police Chief Rick West introduced Moreno, saying he was selected by the department’s leadership and himself, and was unanimously recommended.

“There were a lot of worthwhile candidates up for this award this year,” West said, noting Moreno’s integrity, ethics and honesty. “Officer Moreno day in and day out deserves this recognition.”

West told the club several stories about Moreno’s experience as a police officer.

The chief told the group about a woman who lived outside of Enid and reported losing a $9,000 ring while shopping. He said Moreno took the report from the woman, and then visited each store where the woman shopped that day.

“In doing so, the ring was returned to the store and then back to the woman,” West said. “I told him I wish I had 20 officers just like him. He is one of Enid’s finest.”

Moreno said it was an “honor” to work for the police department.

“For me it’s just an honor working at the Enid Police Department,” he said. “I enjoy working there.”
