Okeene FFA attends convention

Okeene FFA members recently attended the 2008 National Convention in Indianapolis. Those attending were Ally Fischer, Tabitha Fisher, Whitney Day, Kassidy Nelson, Kayla Bedwell, Josie Pauls, Chassidy Bedwell, Quintin Wray, Amy Treece, Megan Fisher, Tyler Bedwell, Jessica Wood, Tanner Bedwell, Kylee Wray, Mason Howe, Tanner Lorenz, Jarod Cross and Dane Krause. Sponsors attending were Clayton Fisher, Jerry and Leslie Bedwell, Lori Day, Tammy Fischer, Tammy Treece, Ron Howe, Jim Krause, Donelle Hart and Renee Murray. Kieth Richardson was the bus driver.

Highlights for the group included Josie Pauls singing a solo in the National FFA Chorus.

Whitney Day was a national finalist in the food science and technology proficiency. She received $500 for being one of the best in the nation with her proficiency.

Okeene FFA chapter received the Two Star National Chapter Award. Fischer and Nelson represented the chapter by walking on stage to receive the award.

Loretta Doak’s first-grade class completed a unit on apples by baking individual apple pies.

Each child rolled out dough and added ingredients and apples to complete his or her pie. Children took their pies home to share with their families.

Special pie helpers included Cathy Brownlee, Judy Jones and Evelyn Pauls.

Elementary Campbell Kids for the month of October have been announced. Receiving a small prize and a certificate for turning in collection sheets were Ryan Moore, Maleah Mayfield, Colby Carter, Caitlin Outhier, Anna Lee, Oscar Recio, Russell Curtis, Hayley Spaeth and Casi Grubbs.

Collection sheets are available for all students to collect and turn in at the elementary school.

Okeene School Foundation presented grants totaling $3,953.21 to local teachers and administration.

Teachers receiving grants were Kris Osmus, listening center; Kiley Feely, video technology; Tara Fisher, turnitin; Cheryl Boeckman, captain keyboard; Jeremy Osmus, principal, CD system to hear Spanish; Ginny Dobrinski, stage craft/technical theater; Henri Blehm, survival of the reader; Stephanie Hansen, writing confidence for special education; and Jana Schultz, reading palettes.

Foundation Board Members presenting the grants were Becky Walker, Kerry Westfahl, Kristi Kraft, Karel Dobrinski and Tony Shellabarger.

 



Community



A Veterans Day assembly will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the high school auditorium. This special program is to honor local veterans. Guest speaker for the program will be Dr. Richard Brittingham. Veterans and auxiliary will receive special recognition.

Student council officers will take part in this program. OHS vocal group will provide special music along with a DVD presentation. To conclude the program, “Taps” will be performed by OHS trumpet players.

Okeene Public Library held a special Halloween story time. Lee Ann Barnes, librarian, read “Hocus-Pocus Halloween” to nearly 75 children.
