Construction continues at Enid’s YMCA

Denny Price Family YMCA has been going through construction work for around a year, but officials hope it all will be finished up in the next few months.

“In June we completed the new addition and moved into it,” said Ken Rapp, executive director. “The new addition has the lobby, the chapel, bathrooms, administrative offices, and the real focal point, the new nursery, where toddlers can be while their parents work out.”

Next on the YMCA’s construction to-do list was a renovation. Tuesday’s work included floors being laid in the new fitness room and work on a new parking lot to allow more accessibility for patrons with disabilities.

“We are approximately three weeks from being able to move into the renovated area,” Rapp said. “We knocked all the walls down to have one area to have all our fitness equipment in. We will have free weights, aerobics, cardio and stretching. Those were scattered across the building.”

Once the area is ready, new equipment will be brought in.

“It will create a pleasant workout area and environment. Laying the floor is kind of the last part of the renovation,” Rapp said.

The renovation has increased the area for free weights, aerobics, cardio and stretching by around 50 percent.

Once everything is moved into the newly renovated area work will begin on the downstairs area.

“We will renovate the downstairs area to create a youth and teen interactive fitness area,” Rapp said. “It will be game-style exercise. There will be bikes with video games on them that you have to pedal to play. There will be ‘Dance Dance Revolution’ and a sports wall. It creates movement and fun.”

Some areas of the facility have not seen updates, including the swimming pool, climbing wall, indoor track and basketball court.

“This renovation complements our existing facilities,” Rapp said.

He hopes to have a grand opening of the new facilities after the first of the year.

“There is something for all ages,” Rapp said.
