Area being hit by scams

Waukomis Police Chief Phillip Ott said “two or three” people have fallen prey to another phone scam in his city.

Ott said callers are asking for “grandma or grandpa” before launching into a story about a car wreck in Canada and needing money for car repairs.

“The amounts have been about the same, around $5,000,” Ott said.

He said the callers state they are “with a few friends” in Canada and have been involved in an auto accident. They ask for money to be sent and call back, say “thank you” and confirm the money had been received.

“They are not to call them on their cell phone because it doesn’t work up here,” Ott said.

Enid Police Department also issued a warning to the public Thursday of a text message scam and messages left on answering machines.

The scam concerns a Central National Bank debit card being deactivated or being involved in a scam, according to police.

“If you receive any of these messages instructing you to contact a number, do not respond because they are a scam,” said EPD Capt. Jack Morris.

The current number listed in the text message, (580) 366-4933, already has been deactivated by the Federal Trade Commission.
