Two Enid High School students and a Ringwood High School student are among students acting in “Con/Con,” a play based on the events of the 1907 Oklahoma Convention.
The production has been called “one of the most important events in the Centennial Celebration.”
EHS senior Emily E. Atkinson will portray Charles L. Moore, a delegate to the convention from Enid; Hannah L. Burton, also an EHS senior, will portray Charles Hol-land Pittman, another delegate from Enid; and Rachel Kliewer, an RHS senior, will portray D.G. Harned, a delegate from Ringwood.
The convention produced a state constitution, but only after a whirlwind of conflicting interests were presented from such representatives as Suffragettes, anti-saloon forces, tavern-keepers associations and every imaginable political position.
The students will join with other high school seniors from across the state in Guthrie Oct. 20 to perform.
Activities start at 12:30 p.m. on the grounds of Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, at the intersection of Oklahoma and Capital streets, with men, women and children in Victorian dress stroll-ing on the lawn and interacting with the audience. There will be stump speeches, petitions and all the chaos and excitement of the original convention. At 2, the audience will join with state governmental officials and others in the main auditorium of the temple to watch the play.
There is no admission, and the play and events are open to the public.
