Leonardo’s begins science club Oct. 7

by Bridget Nash, Staff Writer

Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse will begin a new endeavon Oct. 7, sponsored by Enid’s Continental Resources.

Science Adventure Club will meet every Tuesday from its first day until Thanksgiving, and a new session will begin after Christmas.

Fifteen club members already have been selected from an application process for the first session of the club.

“(The club) will probably grow in the future,” said Leonardo’s Executive Director Julie Baird. “We wanted to keep it small the first time to make sure we put on a really quality program.”

Funding for the camp has come from Continental Resources in order to promote the importance of science.

“We want to encourage kids to take advantage of the opportunity to learn about science,” said Brian Engel, Continental Resources vice president of public affairs. “Our whole industry, the oil and gas industry, is based on science.”

Continental Resources Exploration Manager Ron Jones will speak at the first meeting of the club. Jones will speak about the opportunities science provides to any student in any walk of life.

“He feels like science saved him,” Baird said of Jones.

For the first session of the club, seven students from Garfield Elementary School have been selected to attend free of charge.

“We’ve basically adopted Garfield School,” said Baird.

The 15 students attending the club will have the opportunity to learn about different kinds of science and also learn other skills, such as problem-solving.
