Helena Oktoberfest slated Saturday



Helena will celebrate Oktoberfest Saturday with a variety of events, including a parade, costume contest, a carnival and food.

Events are:

• Parade, 10:30 a.m. Lineup is at 9:30 a.m.

• Traditional Bavarian costume contest, immediately following the parade.

• Timberlake Public Schools carnival, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• German food booth, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Helena Historical Society Museum, open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Helena Chamber of Commerce will conduct a raffle for a basket of German goodies, and Helena Historical Society will have its third annual pie and cake contest.





Leonardo’s slated to re-open today



Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse will re-open today after being closed for the last 10 days for annual renovations. Most of the renovation projects took place at Adventure Quest, but inside the museum a new traveling exhibit has arrived.

“Eureka!” is the third traveling exhibit to stop at Leonardo’s since the opening of the Oklahoma Museum Network, funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation in 2008. The 12,000-square-foot exhibit includes 12 learning stations for children to enjoy, such as Bed of Nails, Magnetic Brakes, Turntable, Heat Camera, 20 Questions, Safe Crackers, Rope Squirter, Video Light Microscopes, Possibilities and more.

Today also signals the beginning of fall educational outreach programs such as the Continental Resources Science Adventure Club (for middle schools students on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons), Tools for Home Schools (art and science classes for elementary students on Fridays) and art classes for adults. Enrollment still is open for Fall Break Camp.

Enid Writers Club to meet tonight



Enid Writers Club will meet at 7 p.m. today in the conference room of Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Enid. Marsha Kay Oldham will give a presentation about Oklahoma Poetry Society.

Writers of all genres and skill levels are welcome. EWC is an affiliate of Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc. Call Judy Huhman at 242-0418 for information.





Library to host event Friday night



The Public Library of Enid and Garfield County has a “honey” of an evening planned Friday. From 6-9 p.m., there will be a movie, games and the first-ever Trivia Bee.

Christmas in Action needs volunteers



Christmas in Action needs volunteers to help with its work day Oct. 24.

The program has selected 15 homes owned by low-income elderly residents or people with disabilities to receive repairs or paint. Nine of the homes will receive roof repairs or replacement that will be done by contractors who submitted bids.

Christmas in Action is looking for 75 to 100 people who have the skills to do the work and the desire to help out the community. Each volunteer will receive a Christmas in Action T-shirt and lunch.

Christmas in Action is a nonprofit organization that has been providing home repairs in Enid since 1995.
