Avard Folk Festival, featuring area talent is slated Oct. 5-6

Avard will host its third annual Avard Folk Festival Oct. 5-6, with old-time activities such as rope-making, candle-making, quilting and blacksmith demonstrations.

A hay ride begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 5 from Avard Community Building to Avard Park, followed by music by Vanessa Goucher, of Waynoka.

Events Oct. 6 will include a trail ride, dutch oven cook-off and an old-fashioned baking and canning fair and fried chicken challenge.

Tandy Keenan, naturalist at Alabaster Caverns State Park, will present a program on bats at 8:45 a.m. to begin the day Oct. 6.

Trail riders will gather at 9 for a five-hour trail ride. Lunch will be served on the trail.

Eileen Parks, of Waynoka, and Cleota McCraw, of Weatherford, will host at quilt show at 10 at Avard Christian Church. Candle-maker Jennifer Morris, of Fairview, rope-maker Jackie Whittenburg, of Aline, and blacksmith Wayne Smith, of Alva, will lead hands-on demonstrations. Greg McClure will share his sculpting techniques.

Tasting results of the dutch oven cook-off begin at 12:30 p.m.

The baking and canning fair entries will be taken from 1 to 2, and judging begins at 3. The fried chicken challenge is at 2, and the chicken will be auctioned off at 3 by Andy Ferguson.

A concert featuring Van Marsalis and Friends, of Stillwater, will follow a barbecue meal at 6.
