Moorthy to represent state at science camp

Alva’s Ganga Moorthy was recently selected to represent Oklahoma at the National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia.

Moorthy, a 2008 graduate of Alva High School, joined 115 students from across the nation and many more from various other countries in the Monon-gahela National Forest for four weeks of scientific studies.

Various scientists gave lectures and taught studies at the camp on topics such as global warming, genomic medicine, radio astronomy and energy sustainability.

“I have bonded with delegates from all over the world while spending my summer furthering my love of science,” said Moorthy. “I have gained immeasurable knowledge and wonderful friendships.”

While science was the main focus of the camp, those attending were able to explore many other types of learning and recreation.

Moorthy and other delegates had the opportunity to spend time hiking, caving, mountain biking and rock climbing. They also could choose to play sports, take dance lessons and take part in discussions of philosophy, travel, religion and culture.

“NYSC has increased my depth in the biological science while widening my knowledge in various other scientific and non-scientific fields,” said Moorthy.

Moorthy plans to further her education by attending the University of Oklahoma and majoring in microbiology/pre-med. She was one of two Oklahomans selected for the camp. Also selected was Courtney Bass of Edmond.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development, and lifelong professional fulfillment.

Stevison serves as page for state Senate

Blaire K. Stevison, of Enid, was recently appointed to serve as a page for the Oklahoma State Senate, 51st Legislature, Second Session for Senator Patrick Anderson, R-Enid. Stevison will be a senior at Oklahoma Bible Academy. Senate members appoint fewer than 350 students, grades 9-12, from across the state to serve each session. Pages play a vital role in the legislative process and perform a variety of tasks during the week. Pages interact with Senate members on the Senate floor and in Senate committee meetings. Stevison learned about state legislative process, met students from across Oklahoma and participated in a mock legislative session called “Pageville” while at the State Capital. During “Pageville,” pages take on the role of legislator to consider and debate a particular bill. Stevison said the experience was a unique opportunity to hear Senators and other officials speak about legislative issues for our great State.
