Covington Lions going to jail ... for a little renovation work

Covington Lions Club has changed its meeting time to 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. The club meets at Covington Christian Church.

Club members will meet Monday at the old city jail to work on its renovation.

The city of Covington and Lions Club received a grant to help restore the old jail for historical purposes.



Tri-County Senior Center will have a board meeting at 1 p.m. Monday. Murl Wilkins, of Alva, will speak about workers’ compensation and safety.



Covington Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. Monday at Tri-County Senior Center. Members will discuss insurance.



School



Covington-Douglas Public Schools will start classes Aug. 18.

Other important dates and events are new student enrollment, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, and current student enrollment, noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.



A Wildcat trophy auction will be 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 in the school cafeteria.



A junior high school fast-pitch softball tournament will be Aug. 21-23.



A high school football scrimmage will be Aug. 22.



Wildcat Fair will be Aug. 22-23.



A chuckwagon feed will be Aug. 22.



Church



Cactus Canyon was the theme this year for vacation Bible school at Covington First Baptist Church.

There were 61 children enrolled and 45 helpers. YWCA Enid was chosen for the mission project this year.

Each night, children brought money and put it in the class jar. The class that brought the most won a prize at the program. Fifth- and sixth-graders were determined to be the winners.

Money collected was used to buy school supplies for the children living at YWCA.

Helping this year were Jeff Jackson, Pam Peacock, Sheryl Powell, Melissa Sherman, Pat Walter, Candice Rupp, David Reed, Diana Millsap, Ali Bolz, Matt Bolz, Charmin LeForce, Katie Houston, Carolyn Spence, Holly Hobson, Kathy Miller, Taylor Johnson, Nick Phillips, Jordan Jackson, Brianna Hall, Megan Hall, Vicky Ray, Jose Rojas, Cliffton Jones, Josh Dickson, Jeran Jones, Gage Smith, Ty Golay, Brett Stopp, Blake Morris, Hunter Jackson, Diana Mack, Kathy Golay, Megan Swank, Katie Shelton, Marietta Bolz, Tommie Houston, Stephanie Martin, Judy Monroe, Carolyn Peacock, Coltan Franke, Joelle Powell, Mallory Bolz, Bill Martin, Cara Jackson and Janice Kerr.



A mission team from Christ United Methodist Church of Enid, along with members from Covington and Lucien United Methodist churches, painted Debbie Tiggeman’s house in Covington July 24-26.



A fifth Sunday sing will be 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
