Firefighters from three departments battled tough conditions Monday as they fought a fire north of Lahoma.
The fire started as a controlled burn, according to David Wedel, Lahoma fire chief, that jumped Phillips Road near the intersection with Stabe Road. It burned wheat and rye stubble, as well as some grass, before being extinguished.
Firefighters had a hard time getting to the front of the fire, Wedel said, because of the wind. He did not have a count of how many acres were consumed, but said the blaze went from Phillips north about three-quarters of a mile.
His department received the initial call at 4:20 p.m., and he called Drummond and Hillsdale-Carrier departments for assistance. At least 12 firefighters and seven vehicles were on the scene, he said.
It took firefighters about three outs to put the fire out.
