Students band together to raise funds for charity

By Bridget Nash Staff Writer

It began as a yearbook idea, evolved into a schoolwide project and ended with some hefty donations to charity.

Over the past school year, Kremlin-Hillsdale schools pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students raised more than $15,000 to give to various charities.

Krem-lin-Hills-dale lib-rarian and yearbook adviser Jamelyn Schultz said the idea came up in yearbook class as the students were trying to think of a theme for the year.

“Our yearbook class came up with a theme this year called ‘Because We Care,’” she said.

The class asked the school’s student council to partner in the effort, and the group got the entire school involved in holding fundraisers and collecting donations.

Some of the school’s organizations, such as National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, also got involved and held fundraisers, Schultz said.

She said Kremlin students took their fundraising spirit and even spread it to other schools, including Cimarron and Deer Creek-Lamont, which also helped with the fundraising effort.

In the end, Kremlin-Hillsdale, with an enrollment of fewer than 300 students, raised $15,510.20 for organizations such as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Relay for Life, Pennies for Patients and U.S. troop-supporting efforts.

“It was something that became more than what we thought it would be,” Schultz said.
