Carmen will celebrate its first Zucchini Festival July 5.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. in Carmen City Park.
“Other places will have strawberry and watermelon festivals, and we wanted to have our own festival celebrating a food that grows in abundance in the area,” said festival coordinator Margaret Goss. “We invite everyone to grow zucchini and enter it in our festival.”
Events planned include a zucchini throw at the baseball field; a food contest with categories Best Dessert, Best Main Dish and Best Side Dish; a zucchini carving contest; and zucchini growing contest with categories Largest Zucchini, Smallest Zucchini and Most Unusual Zucchini. There also will be a zucchini decorating contest. Zucchini samples will be available for a small fee.
Carmen Fire Department will host a barbecue dinner at the new park pavilion. Pro-ceeds will go to defray the cost of fireworks. Musical entertainment will be available 5-9 p.m. at the gazebo in the park. At dusk, fireworks will be held in the park.
Other activities planned for July 5 include a quilt show at the Methodist Church 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entries for the show will be taken 9-10 a.m., and speakers will present programs throughout the day.
