Summer school now in session

Summer school is in session with the enrollment of 20 students.

Summer staff includes Kristen Heffel, Taylor Heckart, Ryan Boeckman, Kyle Felder, Kayla Kraft and Jana Schultz. Success Express classes will be held through the end of June.

A nine-week challenge was issued to the elementary students for the fourth nine weeks.

Those making the honor rolls had the opportunity to dunk Principal Jeff Wardlaw or Superintendent Ron Pittman in the dunk tank.

Fifty-eight students made the principal’s honor roll, and 20 students made the superintendent’s honor roll.

Each year, Northwest Wheatland Reading Council donates books to teachers who are members of the council.

This year’s honors went to first-grade students Jess Gambill, Anna Lee and Maleah Mayfield.

This year’s featured book was “Hoobachoo,” written by local author Robert Davis, of Canton.

Campbell Kids for the Month of May were Samuel Halverson, Grace Seelke, Caitlin Outhier, Erik Gutierrez, Jaycee Mullins, Austin Barley, Trey Brown, Bryson Jinkens and Karlyn Kraft.

Students receiving the U.S. Department of Education Presidential Award from sixth grade were Zephan Hawkins, Mitchell Howe, Austin Jordan, Matthew Lamar, Ashlyn Long, Tony Montez, Brexton Smith and Troy Turner. This award is based on academics and leadership.

Students earning the President’s Outstanding Academic Excellence Award for sixth grade were Zephan Hawkins, Austin Jordan, Mitchell Howe and Brexton Smith.

Masonic Lodge awards were presented to sixth-grade students Zephan Hawkins and Austin Jordan.

Presenting the awards was Seth Wray, Masonic Lodge member. This award was based on academics, leadership and citizenship.

Okeene High School seniors received $189,000 in scholarships from colleges.

Students received another $100,000 from Oklahoma’s Promise, bringing the total to $289,000 in scholarships for seniors. Seniors graduating with high honors, 3.8 GPA and above, were Caleb Westfahl, Jonathan Talley, Ryan Haffner, Jacob Parrish, Matthew Benham, Allison Fischer, Dalton Brewer, Riley Longacre, Brock Wardlaw and Morgan Kubat.

Seniors graduating with high honors, 3.5 to 3.79 GPA, were Kassidy Nelson, Chassidy Bedwell, Whitney Hamilton, Josie Pauls, Audre Schwartz, Tiffany Robinson and Kayla Kraft.

All of thse students received scholarships, as did Jasmine Herron, Tia Shellabarger, Megan Fisher Meghan Dixon and Tabbitha Fischer.



Community

Summit Living Center has been named Business of the Month for June.

The center also is celebrating its sixth anniversary. Owners are James and Sarah Sims, of Okeene.

Members of Okeene Boy Scout Troop 169 and Cub Scout Pack 169 recently paid a visit to the state Capitol.

They had the opportunity to visit with Rep. Mike Sanders and Sen. John Enholf. The Boy Scouts were working on their Citizenship Activity Badge.

Boys attending were Mitchell Howe, Austin Jordan, Mason Howe, Brexton Smith, Zephan Hawkins, Jayce Osmus, Zeb Hawkins, Trey Brown, Koby Smith and Isaac Seelke.

Also attending were Grace Seelke, Madison Howe, Levi Smith and Miles Howe. Sponsors were Jamie Smith, Lisa Howe, Lori Brown, Matthew and Lois Seelke.

The team Feely Freaks raised $6,180 for American Cancer Society.

The Cannonball Run team raised more than $13,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
