Officials: Dogs poisoned in Quail Meadows North

At least six dogs in the Quail Meadows North addition area have been poisoned by ingesting what investigators for Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said was gopher bait.

Deputy Brent Vauhgn said his office received the first report of a poisoning May 22 and has received others since. He said at least three dogs died from ingesting the bait and three others had been sickened and treated by veterinarians.

Vauhgn said a pile of gopher bait was found on a lot between homes in the addition. He said the first animal to die from the poison was found near a pile of regurgitated gopher bait.

“We spoke with the landowner, and he said he had never put anything out,” Vauhgn said. “We’re still following up on leads about a possible suspect.”

Vauhgn said a necropsy report on one of the animals revealed strychnine in its system, the same poison found in the gopher bait. He also said none of the dogs was poisoned on their owners’ property.

He warned pet owners in the area to keep an eye on their animals.

“Anybody with information needs to get a hold of us,” Vauhgn said.
