Man treated at local hospital after car collides with truck

By Scott Fitzgerald Staff Writer

Kenneth Cannady, 51, of Enid, was treated for internal injuries at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center and later told Enid police he had taken a Valium prior to driving a Dodge Magnum that collided with a concrete truck on Friday, according to an accident report.

The accident occurred in the 1800 block of West Chestnut near the intersection with North Lincoln shortly before 10:34 a.m.

The truck driver, Melvin Howard, of Enid, was not injured, according to Enid Police Department officials.

Cannady was driving west in the 1600 block of West Chestnut when he went over the center line and drove in the eastbound lane, according to the report.

Howard was driving east when he saw Cannady’s car traveling directly into his path, according to the report. He swerved into the west lane to avoid a collision but struck the passenger side of the Dodge.

Todd Whitley, who was driving behind Cannady, said he noticed the Dodge Magnum being driven erratically.

“I seen him swerve. I followed the guy and before I could blink — disaster,” Whitley said.

Whitley said he got out of his car and rushed to attend to Cannady and remove him from the crashed vehicle in case of fire.

“The car was not leaking. He was alive. He was coherent. I’ve taken first aid response. I didn’t panic,” Whitley said.

Whitley said he talked to Cannady until Life EMS responders arrived.
