Probe: Elementary students bring marijuana to school

By Cass Rains Staff Writer

Campus police have concluded an investigation into the presence of drugs at Monroe Elementary School, school officials said.

“On Tuesday and Wednesday we had students who brought illegal substances to campus,” said Amber Graham Fitzgerald, school and community relations director for Enid Public Schools.

She said other students had handled the drugs but no one reported the situation to an adult until late Wednesday afternoon.

Fitzgerald said after it was reported to an adult, campus police were contacted.

“They conducted the investigation that continued through today (Thursday) and that investigation has concluded,” she said. “They have forwarded the results to the Office of Juvenile Affairs, and there will be disciplinary action taken against students involved.”

She said the parents of the students have been involved since the investigation began.

Fitzgerald said two students each brought an illegal substance to Monroe, which teaches classes for pre-kindergarten to sixth grade. She said investigators do not know what substance was brought on campus Tuesday but said the substance Wednesday was marijuana.

“It was a different child on each day,” she said.

Notes were sent home to parents Thursday informing them of the incident and reminding parents of the importance of speaking with children about the dangers of drugs.
