Deadline for a health-based summer school Wednesday

The deadline for Enid Public Schools Summer Academy is quickly approaching, and Amber Graham Fitzgerald, EPS school and community relations director, encourages parents to enroll their children.

“It gives students an opportunity for enrichment in the summertime,” Fitzgerald said. “It keeps their minds active and applies the knowledge they’ve learned all year long.”

This year’s summer academy, “Dr. Me: Building Bodies and Brains,” will focus on medicine, including learning about the human body, nutrition, exercise and health. Fitzgerald said medical professionals will help with activities for the program.

Students also will practice math, language arts, science, social studies, computer and art in the summer academy.

“We’re really moving away from the concept of summer school,” Fitzgerald said. “Jane Johnson has worked hard to make this like a summer camp for students, very creative and innovative.”

Johnson is principal at Hayes Elementary School, 2102 Beverly, where the program will be held 8:30-11:30 a.m. each day June 2-27.

Deadline to enroll for the program is Wednesday. Cost is $155. Students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade are eligible for “Dr. Me.” Scholarships are available. Parents can contact site principals for information and register at www.enidpublicschools.org.
