Achievers for 05/12/08

Highfill earns designation

Chisholm High School senior Brandon Highfill is one of five Oklahoma high school seniors named a Chancellor Hans Brisch Scholar.

The 2008 scholars were selected from more than 90 nominations made by high school principals statewide.

Highfill is active as leader of Garfield County’s 4-H Community Service Project Club and Clovers Serving Intensely Club. He has volunteered 109 hours to plan, organize, promote and lead 23 service projects. Under his leadership, 229 volunteers have reached 3,900 individuals through completion of service projects, including recording five public service announcements promoting the service projects on local radio stations.

Highfill has served as a legislative page for Oklahoma House of Representatives and State Senate. He has served on Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and as a counselor at a Quad-County Junior 4-H camp. In 2007, he served as an Oklahoma delegate to Citizenship Washington, D.C., where he met with Oklahoma’s congressional delegation to learn more about government, bill writing and committee work. In 2008, Highfill was selected to attend Oklahoma State University President’s Leadership Council, Leadership Conclave; served as District 4-H president; and was a team member for the state 4-H team.

He will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Enid area students honored

Chaylana Burpo, a sophomore at Oklahoma Bible Academy, and Monica Johnson, a junior at Cimarron High School in Lahoma, have been selected for membership in National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). The society recognizes top scholars who have achieved superior academic excellence.

Membership in NSHSS entitles students to benefits including scholarships, academic competition events, members-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, gifts and publicity honors.

USAA recognizes Tripp

United States Achievement Academy has recognized Jamie Tripp from Aline as a student of excellence in mathematics.

The academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Tripp, who attends Aline-Cleo High School, was nominated for this honor by Kay Koehn, a math teacher at the school.

Tripp will appear in U.S. Achievement Academy’s Official Yearbook, which is published nationally.

The academy recognizes students upon exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and based on academy standards, including academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, attitude and cooperative spirit and dependability.

Tripp is the daughter of Kevin and Junell Tripp of Oklahoma City and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burnell Cameron of Grand Island, Neb., and Don and Judy Newman of Aline.
