Lady Whippets make history

The Okeene Lady Whippets capped off the 2008 track season with their fourth state championship title in five years, allowing them to take their place in the history books of Oklahoma track and field. Dating back to the first records beginning in 1972, only one other women’s team regardless of class has won four state championships and a runner-up over a five year period.

The team is coached by Mike Jinkens.

The Okeene Whippets finished third at the state meet.

The Okeene High School Whippet Marching Band received a superior rating and placed fourth in Class 1A in the Tri-State Music Festival Parade held in Enid. Making the Tri-State Honor Band were Jonathan Talley, Ashley Rover and Kathleen Crook.

Seniors are now receiving announcements for scholarships. Those receiving scholarships are Jordan Nault, $500 residence award at Southwestern Oklahoma State University; Sierra Carter, a $500 residence award from SWOSU; Ryan Boeckman, a $500 residence award from SWOSU; Jaimie Nault, a $1,000 Freshman Scholar Award from SWOSU; Kathleen Crook, a Distinguished Freshman Scholarship from SWOSU in the amount of $3,584, for tuition; and Ashley Rover, a $1,000 Freshman Scholar Award.

Rise and Shine will be held in the cafeteria at 8:25 a.m. Monday.

------------

The FFA Speech Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

------------

Physicals for boys in grades seven through 12 will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Okeene Clinic Tuesday.

------------

A 4-H meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday.

------------

All third- through sixth-grade library books are due Tuesday.

------------

The AP language exam will be given on Wednesday.

------------

Grades five through 12 will hold a spring band and vocal music concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the high school Auditorium.

------------

Thursday is the last day for purchasing items at the Library AR Store with book points.

------------

The elementary book fair begins Thursday.

------------

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten promotion will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in the high school auditorium.
