Covington-Douglas grad is named an Outstanding Senior at NWOSU

Garrett “Scott” Cline, a 2004 Covington-Douglas High School graduate, has been named an Outstanding Senior at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

To be selected as an Outstanding Senior, students must show campus and/or community involvement, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better, have completed at least 60 hours at Northwestern, never have been subject to academic or disciplinary action and show the promise of future achievement.

Cline will receive a bachelor of science degree in mathematics education May 9.

He already has passed the Oklahoma General Education Tests (OGET), the Oklahoma Subject Area Tests (OSAT) and the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination (OPTE); all are certificate examinations for educators. Cline also is qualified to coach.

He has not decided where he is going after graduation to coach and teach.

“I have had an offer but I have another interview to do before I decide,” he said.

Cline has served as president and secretary of Northwestern Math Club, treasurer of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and was a judge for Heartland BEST robotics competition.

Cline became involved with the Math Club through his major.

“This year I am president of the Math Club. My major is mathematics education,” he said.

Cline was involved with SADD to encourage others to not make bad decisions.

“I was also the officer of the SADD organization,” he said. “If I were to make lots of bad decisions I wouldn’t be where I am today. It is a good organization. It is nice to be in an organization, not around drinking.”

Cline and seven members other members of Northwestern’s 2009 class will be honored at 6 tonight in the Student Center Ranger Room.

Each recipient will receive a plaque and $100 savings bond.
