Laverne man is struck, injured by towed trailer

By Cass Rains, Staff Writer

A Laverne man is in stable condition at a Kansas hospital after being struck by a trailer being towed by a pickup while he was walking on Oklahoma 14 in Woods County last night, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says.

Earl Spencer Wood, 40, was walking southbound about 9:30 p.m. Friday night on Oklahoma 14 about two and half miles north of Waynoka in heavy rain when he was struck by the trailer.

William Scott Oberman, 37, of Wellsville, Kan., swerved to avoid hitting Wood and entered the west ditch, causing the fender of the 16-foot trailer he was towing, containing a four-wheeler, to hit Wood, according to the OHP report. Wood fell on top of the trailer, striking the four-wheeler and breaking the cargo strap, then fell into the ditch.

Wood was taken to Share Medical Center in Alva by Waynoka EMS with head, external body, arm and leg injuries and was later transferred to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kan., in stable condition. Oberman and his three passengers were not injured.

The report lists Wood’s condition as “drinking/ability impaired” and lists the cause of the accident as “pedestrian action.”
